In this tut, we will use the "edge mode" which one access by clicking as shown on the picture

Choose the shape of the brush you want to apply on the engraving.
Adapt the size of the brush if necessary.
The color has no importance, we are just making a base to work with.
We won't keep this base.
Choose a shape with sharp edges, avoid those with blur or transparency,
otherwise the cutting of the shadows will be less clean to create a "sculpture" effect.
For example, I chose this shape :

Open your image or tube, the basis on which we will apply the sculpture.
Duplicate it (CTRL+D). Close the original. Never forget that you never work on an original.
Add a new layer.
Apply your decoration on the layer.
Go to "Effects","3D Effects","Drop shadow".

Apply a dark gray shadow, vertical and horizontal at 1, opacity at 100, blur at 0.
Don't forget to check the "Shadow on a new layer" box.

Select the decoration layer again and this time, apply a white shadow, vertical and horizontal at -1, opacity at 100, blur at 0.

Here is the layer order you should have.

Select the decoration layer once more.
Press (CTRL+A) then (CTRL+F) to make the selection floating.
Right click on the floating selection layer and select "Defloat" in the menu.

Select the dark shadow layer and press "Del" on the nomeric keypad to delete the interior part of the shadow.
Repeat with the light shadow layer.
Deselect by right clicking in the image. Hide the decoration layer.

Here are two different effects depending on which shadow is at -1 or +1.

In the first example, the effect is carved, in the second, it is bulged.
It's up to you to choose which effect you are looking for.

It is at this point that other tuts tell you to play with transparency.
I rather show you another way of doing.
This is where the "edge mode" comes into play. We will apply it to the two layers.
For my example, I applied these settings :

The advantage is that the color of the shadows melts into that of the image.

It's up to you to have fun to try all the effects to see what fits best.
Here are examples applied to different tubes with matching settings.

You'll find the objects of the examples and much more here

I forgot : you can delete the decoration layer unless you intend to use it as I did in the last example. :)

Last little point : Instead of a brush , you can use a dingbat pattern.
